First, trump lies every time he opens his mouth. He can never be trusted. He walks back he says all the time and breaks promises. He neglects to pay his contractors. He's had 6 bankruptcies. He's a convicted felon.

Also, a saying down here is that every gop accusation is a confession. Meaning that when they accuse someone, the government or whomever, it often means that the accuser is guilty of that same action. Hold the goal posts. Make them set in concrete. Please. ~a michigander

Could this have been a deliberate, hotmike moment? The only Canadians who are pretending that this has anything to do with fentanyl are bad actors who are working for Trump and gaslighting Canadians. Like Danielle Smith and Pierre Poilievre

I could definitely believe it was deliberate.

TBH, I would argue that a plurality if not a majority already believe Trump is a potential threat to our sovereignty, if not in the short term than the medium one. I believe that the next election will pivot on which leader can articulate at least a partial solution on dealing/handling Trump's actions to mitigate damage to Canada.

Yes yes yes . America is no longer a benign ally but an economic and perhaps military threat . Call it like it is and dismiss those who hide the truth. We need to discuss this within reason to deny the potential truth serves no one but the aggressor .

The most important point in Trudeau's hot mic was about the US wanting Canada's critical minerals.

Same as it ever was: our superpower neighbour and ally wants our natural resources.

They already have them (see our 10% discounted oil exports).

So now Trump is openly squeezing us to secure a good deal on the critical minerals crucial to the future. Obviously we are a better supply source than China or DRC.

Our challenge is to figure out leverage to secure a good deal for us. Our Critical Minerals Strategy lays out the goal of building an entire value chain; I.e., not just exporting raw minerals, as we have historically done, but processing here to create more value and jobs.

These are the real terms.

Trump wants cheap access.

Canada should fight for better.

So what? Just because he wants to do it doesn't mean he can. We are giving him far too much credit by pretending that one person - even the US president - has so much power. He wasn't even able to enact the tariffs he threatened us with.

The Overton window on Canadian US relations has shifted.

My bet is that there will be serious discussions on a joint currency and economic union (like the Schengen zone) in the next decade.

Everything is connected, Greenland, Panama, Canada, Mexico. Do not underestimate Trump, or rather do not underestimate the concerns of the voters who put him in the presidency, twice. The US has long term strategic interests on the contenent and we have to look at this with a 21st century mindset and not default on 20th century assumptions.

Canada has to decide what our place in the world is, do we fall back on our Commonwealth ties? Do we try isolationism? Do we try to continue to thread the needle on economic integration with the US and maintaining our sovereignty? Do we cozy up to other emergent powers like China?

Listen to Steve Banonns interview this week on Canada. The Americans and our allies have been asking Canada to get serious on defense for a while - they are done asking.

And also do not underestimate our business and political classes’ appetite for appeasement rather than doing the hard and expensive work to re-orient our economy and build our military for our own security.

First: you are not doing us any favours by putting up false DT posts. He does that enough himself and doesn’t need help.

Second: Trudeau “snow balls chance in hell” comment, a week or so ago, was spot on.

Third: as soon as we get Trump’s “Canada as 51st state” thinking in the same category as his “plan for Gaza” thinking - that is, completely insane and nonsensical - the better off we’ll all be.

As to Trump’s threat, here is my rebuttal: and how will he do that when he’s rotting behind bars?
